Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 18th to early 19th century CE. Finely painted in egg tempera on gesso atop wood, a beautiful icon depicting Saint Nicholas of Myra, the Wonderworker, the most revered figure in Eastern Orthodox Christianity. A faithful shepard and Bishop, Nicholas was bestowed the title of Saint even before his death due to his immense holiness and watchful care of his faithful flock. Nicholas is flanked by apparitions of Christ and the Virgin Mary while wearing sumptuous episcopal vestments, a cross-adorned omophorion, with his left hand holding a holy Gospel while his right is giving benediction. He also dons an intricate crown above lobes of puffy white hair, and his piercing eyes stare towards the viewer through the otherwise static confines of space and time. This is a timeless example of one of the most cherished individuals in the Church Slavonic. Size: 11.125" W x 14" H (28.3 cm x 35.6 cm).
Saint Nicholas is portrayed as a staunch champion of the Christian faith, a defender against heresy, and a healer. He was also a powerful opponent of the heretical bishop Arius at the Council of Nicaea; after slapping Arius in the face, Nicholas was stripped of his holy insignia and tossed in jail. However, Christ and the Virgin appeared to him and gave him back his freedom and his episcopal office. The visages of each figure are painted with impressive naturalism, their vestments intricately patterned, making for marvelous contrasts between figure and ground. A marvelous icon of St. Nicholas, the memorable archbishop of southern Asia Minor in the 4th century who inspired Santa Claus legends and imagery!
