Likely North America, ca. 18th century CE or earlier. A substantial sperm whale tooth with a smooth, aged patina and natural ivory coloration. This robust and well-preserved tooth showcases the characteristic curved form, with a third of it made up of the enamel and the remainder being the massive hollow root, typical of Physeter macrocephalus. Its incredible size is a testament to the whale's remarkable ability to capture giant squid and wreak havoc on sailors and boats with its massive body. While its exact provenance is unknown, such teeth were historically prized for scrimshaw engraving, maritime keepsakes, and decorative objects. A "white whale" of a find for collectors of whaling artifacts, maritime antiques, or natural curiosities, this tooth is truly a remarkable piece of natural history. Size: 7.5" L x 3" W (19 cm x 7.6 cm)
The presence of deep yellow coloration, age cracks, presence of calcified growths on the interior and heavy weight show this is a very old example that is at the beginning of the fossilization stage. We guarantee it is over 200 years old but we estimate the age well beyond this. This is an ESA antique exempt piece of whale ivory and cannot be sold internationally or to anyone residing in the states of California, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, and Washington.
Provenance: private Elizabeth City, North Carolina, USA collection, acquired in 2012
