North Pacific, Hawaii, likely carved by sailors who stopped in Hawaii on their return voyage to New England, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. This is a hand-carved whale bone stamp with a thick cylindrical handle and a square face, with a whale fluke in relief. The whale's tail is rising from three registers of wavy lines indicating water; the surface retains much of the black ink from the years of use. Stamps were an invaluable tool for whalers to chart their catches and overall success. In captain logs, the bold whale shaped stamp could quickly and efficiently show how many whales were harvested, what type, or how many were seen. Tails denoted whales that were seen, and a full body denoted whales killed. The small indentation on the handle side of this stamp indicates the upward orientation of the face when used. This stamp probably originated from New England whalers that were in the Pacific, likely stopping in Hawaii for refueling before continuing their voyage.
