West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. This is a massive bronze currency bracelet, cast in two pieces then secured together with pin findings made via the lost wax technique. The band has a flared and scalloped flange around the broad openings and the center of the band has three slightly raised ridges encircling the exterior. The thickness and size make this a very hefty item to wear, and this example was perhaps created originally as a ritualistic object that was traded and used as a currency piece. Size: 2" W x 4" Diameter (5.1 cm x 10.2 cm); 6" H (15.2 cm) on included custom stand.
