Northern Europe, Neoclassical period, ca. 18th to early 19th century CE. A stunning, intricately carved shell of a creamy white hue depicting a classical relief of 2 hooded women and 2 nude men. Boasting a classically idealized body and curly tufts of hair, a disinterested male figure leans back in the foreground, bending his left elbow to balance his head in his hand and face away from the hooded woman who kneels at his sandaled foot. His other arm lazily falls towards his lap, with the genuflecting woman holding his right hand to her weeping face, perhaps to kiss it, as she holds her other palm open just below his bent leg. Behind them, the other classically idealized nude male and hooded woman stand and chat; the man's cloak falls behind him as he faces right and bends his right elbow to place his hand up to his mouth with his index finger on his face, as if thinking or whispering, while the veiled woman faces him and stands in the same pose, appearing pensive and concerned. The pose of the seated male, as well as the bow and arrow strap that crosses his chest, indicate that he may be Apollo. Size of shell: 1.5" W x 1.875" H (3.8 cm x 4.8 cm);Size of box: 1.4" W x 1.875" H (3.6 cm x 4.8 cm)
The Neoclassical period saw immense northern European interest in the Classical world, in part inspired by the budding science of archaeology. Artists looked to the deep past for inspiration, but brought an imaginative sensibility to their depictions of it.
