Western Europe, probably England or France, early Neoclassical Period, ca. late 18th to early 19th century CE. A sumptuous ring of wearable form with an ovoid bezel and slender shank all formed from 61.5% gold. Resting within the bezel is a hand-carved chalcedony intaglio of opaque white hues that bears the right-facing bust of a youthful man. The male figure exhibits a wide eye, a prominent nose, a protruding chin, and a shaggy coiffure that is somewhat tamed by the broad fillet stretching across his head. Lustrous patina has developed across the ring body and imbues it with an attractive and sophisticated presentation. Size (ring): 0.68" W x 0.79" H (1.7 cm x 2 cm); (shank): 0.68" W (1.7 cm); (bezel): 0.44" W x 0.59" H (1.1 cm x 1.5 cm); (intaglio): 0.41" W x 0.54" H (1 cm x 1.4 cm); gold quality: 61.5% (equivalent to 14K+); weight: 4.6 grams; US ring size: 4.5
