Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), Mandalay region, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A magnificent white alabaster Buddha statue, large in scale, seated on a lotus pedestal in the dhyanasana position. One hand holds a stupa-shaped pot, while the other touches the earth in the bhumisparsha mudra. Resting upon his head is an ornate makuta-style headdress crown, with wing-like flames extending from the sides. The crown serves as a symbol of the Buddha's supreme spiritual authority while also reflecting the ruling class's sovereignty over worldly power. In Burma, alabaster and marble are referred to as "sagyin," quarried from a mountain range north of Mandalay. The pure white alabaster from these quarries is particularly prized for its smooth texture and luminous quality, making it ideal for sacred depictions of the Buddha- and the white is also the perfect canvas for pigment- and indeed, remains of a red pigment are visible on the surface. Size: 31" L x 14" W x 38" H (78.7 cm x 35.6 cm x 96.5 cm)
This style of crowned Buddha is sometime reffered to a Jambupati style. King Jambupati was an arrogant and powerful ruler who sought to assert his dominance over all other kings. To humble him, the Buddha manifested a magnificent jeweled palace and appeared seated on an elaborate throne, adorned in royal regalia before the king. Witnessing the Buddha's supreme grandeur, Jambupati was overcome with awe and realized the insignificance of worldly power. Humbled, he renounced his arrogance, accepted the Buddha’s teachings, and eventually became a devoted follower.
