East Asia, Mongolia, Dolonnor, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A beautifully cast gilt-copper alloy statue of a standing bodhisattva, adorned in flowing robes, resting upon a lotus pedestal. The right hand is positioned in the vitarka mudra (gesture of discussion or teaching), with the thumb pressed to the index finger. The left hand holds the wire stem of a flower. Small circular bezel settings, likely once containing semi-precious stones or glass, decorate the figure - several still remain, including a large green faceted glass on the right foot, as well as turquoise stones along the chest and in the earrings. The statue is cast separately from the pedestal, attached by tubular tenons, and additional pieces such as the flower stems and scrolling scarves are also cast separately and welded into place. Size: 6" L x 5.5" W x 14" H (15.2 cm x 14 cm x 35.6 cm); gold quality: 34% to 60% (equivalent to 8K+ to 14K+)
Provenance: private Culver City, California, USA collection, by inheritance, collected 1970s to 1980s
