Latin America, Mexico, ca. 18th to early 19th century CE. A gorgeous hand-built wooden chest enveloped in a red-hued finish with the front panel hand-painted in hues of scarlet, navy, forest green, pink, and white. The lovely piece features a lid that is attached to the back wall via 2 hinges. The front panel is decorated with a symmetric design of 2 confronting birds, each sitting atop a flower, as they flank a vase filled with 5 additional flowers. Locking mechanism no longer locks. Expected nicks, abrasions, and scratches, all commensurate with age. Chipping to back left corner. Surface wear to peripheries of lid and base. Some light staining to areas. Otherwise, excellent with impressive remaining pigments.
