- Lot Description
Engraver: Jerome Vallet (French, 1677-1722), ca. 18th century. A large-scale engraving delinated in the Neoclassical style by French engraver Jerome Vallet. The composition includes (1) a depiction of the thermal baths that the Emperor Arcadius - father of Theodosius the Younger (the youngest person to bear the title of co-Augustus) - had built (2) a procession of armed, muscular praetorian soldiers or Roman imperial bodyguards of the emperor and (3) Scythians or Goths conducting the army's horses. The engraving is set in a black matte with a cellophane window protecting the image. Size of visible image: 15.125" L x 21.125" W (38.4 cm x 53.7 cm) Size of matte: 24.25" L x 30.25" W (61.6 cm x 76.8 cm)
The eldest son of engraver Guillaume Vallet, Jerome Vallet was a French engraver who became a member of the Academie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. In addition, he was bestowed the title of "Dessinateur et Graveur Ordinaire du Roi" (draftsman and ordinary engraver of the king) on August 26, 1702.
Similar examples by Jerome Vallet may be found in the collection of the British Museum.
