Europe, Italy, 18th century CE. An oil on board Italian Baroque painting depicting the Virgin and Child surrounded by angels and seraphim with the Holy Spirit radiating holy light that washes over the scene as Mary presents the Divine Child to an elder, perhaps her father Joachim. The painting presents hallmarks of the Baroque period - rich jewel tone hues, dramatic use of chiaroscuro, a drawn billowing curtain to at the upper left, and an overall theatrical quality that imbues the scene with a sacred air. In addition, the placement of the figures, so close to the picture plane and almost spiraling before the viewer creates a sense of dynamism and impending movement also characteristic of this period. A beautiful work of religious art! Size: 13.5" L x 8.625" W (34.3 cm x 21.9 cm); 18.125" L x 13.375" W (46 cm x 34 cm) framed

Condition
The painting is quite strong with vivid imagery and brilliant jewel tone hues. There is nice craquelure, but the composition of the painting is quite stable. The frame dates later than the painting, but complements it well. There is a board placed over the verso that when lifted reveals the original stretcher bars and verso of the painting which shows some stains that may have developed from the saturation of oil paint through the wooden board.
