European, Italian, Still Life with Bird, Flowers, and Ruins - oil on board, ca. 18th to 19th century. A mesmerizing natura morta (Italian still life) painting featuring a single bird drinking from a scalloped bowl, a golden fluted vase filled with a lavish array of blooms delineated with impressive attention to detail and a masterful use of color before a dilapidated column base, an empty vase lying on a step or architectural platform, and in the distance, a mysterious landscape replete with architectural ruins. Italian natura morta paintings focused on the "abundance of nature" which would in turn greatly influence western art and culture. The painting is mounted in a custom frame that is hand-painted with golden vine and shell motifs. Size (sight view): 16.4" L x 25" W (41.7 cm x 63.5 cm) Size (frame): 22.25" L x 30.875" W (56.5 cm x 78.4 cm)
In addition to its undeniable artistry, this painting is imbued with layers of symbolism. Beautiful bouquets of flowers that are in full bloom traditionally symbolize growth, life, power, and faith - while wilting flowers symbolize the fragility of life and beauty. Birds, on the other hand, traditionally symbolized the resurrection of the soul following death. The ruins symbolize the fragility and fleeting nature of life. Including ruins in artwork is a tradition that began during the Renaissance when ruins stood for lost knowledge of the classical world.

Condition
Painting presents with expected age wear and nice craquelure throughout. It appears to have been mounted on a newer board for stabilization. Imagery and hues are vivid. Frame shows expected age wear with scuffs and fissures but is intact and complements the painting beautifully.
