South Asia, India, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A wonderful high relief panel, hand-carved from stone to depict a man with a flute and another figure holding a drum. They stand on a rectangular shelf, and their backs are against a flat panel. They both wear knee length garments and seem to be dancing to the music. The right man holds a flute to his pursed lips. His ears are elongated with earrings, and his coiffure is pulled into a bun at his neck. The other figure leans away from the flutist and holds a cylindrical drum at his waist. A beautiful piece depicting devotees that may have been part of a temple or a shrine. Size: 8" L x 4" W x 14.25" H (20.3 cm x 10.2 cm x 36.2 cm); 17.75" H (45.1 cm) on included custom stand.
