Central Asia, southern India, Mughal Period, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A fine battle-ready ensemble from Mughal India. The hemispherical carbon-steel shield has a brass border, four applied nubbins with floral peripheries, and incised panels of Arabic script as well as human and zoomorphic motifs. A large carbon-steel Khula Khud helmet presents with delicate silvered (12%) inlays that comprise an abstract face, a pair of curved horns, a central petaloid finial on top, a chain-mail mesh periphery with three draped triangular panels on the verso, and a projecting nose guard with two encircles crosses. Last is a gorgeous battle axe comprised of high-grade (85%) silver with a brass elephant finial on the body, a crescent-shaped blade with four additional elephant images, a top barb, and a hollow handle that hides a lengthy spike on the end of the threaded, knob-form handle end. A fantastic gathering from Mughal-era India! Size of largest (axe): 22" L x 4.875" W (55.9 cm x 12.4 cm); quality of silver: axe is 85%, and silvered inlays on helmet are 12%.

Condition
Shield has light abrasions, minor indentations, softening to finer details, and slight bending to overall form; mounted on verso with modern suspension chain. Helmet has slight bending to horns and nose guard, with softening to some incised details and silver inlays, and nice patina throughout. Axe has slight bending to form of blade and interior spike, with minor abrasions, and fading to some finer details; interior spike is still removable. All items are intact and very good, with light earthen deposits and great patina throughout.
