Central Europe, southern Germany, ca. 18th century CE. A charming elephant ivory sculpture of baby Jesus with a 14-karat gold halo as he poses dynamically, stepping forward with arms bent at elbows and head bowed. Carefully carved with a coiled coiffure, the adorable child presents a cherubic visage with chubby cheeks, slender eyes, a round nose, a tall forehead, and a closed mouth. His nude body displays an elongated torso and short legs with one arm raised while the other is angled downward, mirroring the path of his gaze. Though most of the ivory is left bare, the artist has added a few painted details such as his hair and eyes. Note the natural graining forming interlacing spiral patterns on his tiered ivory plinth. This type of figure, called "Brautigam-Typus" or "Bridegroom Type" in English, was made for nuns upon profession of vows and becoming a "bride of Christ." Size: 2.3" W x 5.3" H (5.8 cm x 13.5 cm)
Similar ivory sculptures of Brautigam-Typus Jesus can be found at the Metropolitan Museum of Art under accession numbers 24.80.92 and 1975.437.4a–e.
