Western Europe, France, Rococo period, ca. second half of the 18th century CE. A breathtaking silk and whale ivory fan meticulously decorated with embroidery, sequins, and gilding as well as hand-painted with a romantic scene of courtly elegance. The silk leaf boasts the central imagery of 2 ladies and a gentleman who bows down on his knees before them, all dressed in 18th-century French attire and surrounded by scrolling vegetal and floral motifs with a grouping of instruments and pages of musical score on each side. The ivory sticks are skillfully hand-carved with ornate openwork and gilt figures. Size of fan: 19.8" W x 10" H (50.3 cm x 25.4 cm); of frame: 22.5" W x 12.3" H (57.2 cm x 31.2 cm)

Condition
Set in modern frame with suspension wire on verso. Professional restoration to small area of left side and some tearing along ribs. Some losses to gilt figures on sticks and few sequins, as well as rubbing to paint in areas. A few small stains. Otherwise, excellent with nice remaining pigments, gilding, and sequins. Has not been examined outside of frame.
