European, France, ca. 18th century. A charming painting of Joan of Arc (Jeanne d'Arc), the heroine of the Hundred Years' War and later a canonized Roman Catholic saint, kneeling with her hands pressed together in a prayerful gesture, her feathered helmet removed and sitting on the ground before her so that we can see her expressive visage, amidst a finely delineated landscape replete with rolling hills, mountainsides, leafy trees, and tiny staffage figures, including a horse and rider in the middle distance. This composition was painted on either leather or a thin wooden board, framed by a gold leaf border with impressed circular motifs, and set upon a wooden board that was painted with a Neoclassical motif inspired by Fourth Style Roman wall paintings with gold floral and vessel motifs against a black ground. This is surrounded by a border identical to the inner gold leaf border that 'frames' the Joan of Arc painting. Size: 8.25" W x 5.875" H (21 cm x 14.9 cm); mount measures 10.25" W x 8.3" H (26 cm x 21.1 cm)
Joan of Arc (Jeanne d'Arc), the Maid of Orleans, was an illiterate villager canonized by the Roman Catholic Church for her military leadership - which she said was guided by visions from God - during the Hundred Years War. Tragically, she was burned at the stake as a martyr (and enemy combatant). An unusual figure with a striking story, Joan of Arc has inspired women and men for generations.

Condition
Joan of Arc painting shows some waviness to the board and craquelure throughout. Old nicks to the peripheries of the board with the Neoclassical decorative program, some scuffs, scratches, and areas of craquelure. Attached to velveteen covered mount at upper verso of painting with velcro that could probably be removed.
