Europe, France, ca. 18th century CE. A lovely cast-brass signal cannon atop an ivory mount. The cannon is comprised of a lengthy barrel with five thick fillets, a small wick spout near the knob-adorned cascabel, and a pair of thick trunnions secured to the mount with arching brass bars. The base is hand-carved from ivory and features four small wheels and an open design for raising or lowering the barrel with ease. A small chain is attached on the front of the base, and a small ivory stopping block is chained to the backside. The brass barrel is covered in scattered areas of green and blue-green patina. Size: 11.375" L x 5.25" W x 5.375" H (28.9 cm x 13.3 cm x 13.7 cm).
The ivory mount pre-dates 1900 and was acquired long before the 1970 ban on ivory trade.
