**Originally Listed At $400**
Northern and Central Europe, Austria, ca. 1773 CE; Germany, ca. 1807 CE; likely Great Britain or France, ca. 19th century CE. A wonderful collection of 6 pewter and zinc copper alloy plates, each of discoid form with a slightly sunken central basin. Made from zinc copper alloy, the largest of the 6 is likely from Great Britain and displays a flared periphery and a "C" hallmark on its base. The remaining 5 are made of pewter. The second shows a recessed band near its periphery and is inscribed with the letters "G.M. K" above the year "1868." Another of similar form features a partial hallmark of crowned hammer, likely to indicate metal quality, on the edge of the front. On the opposite edge, the letters "FPI" and a star are imprinted, perhaps representing the initials of the previous owner. The fourth plate is incised by 3 sets of initials along the front periphery, consisting of "RAT," "GAL," and "MBS." Its verso exhibits 2 Salzburg hallmarks, indicating that it is of Austrian origin. Size (of largest): 10.375" in diameter x 0.75" H (26.4 cm x 1.9 cm)
Last, the final 2 plates present deeper basins than the others and feature 4 marks on their versos: 2 are maker's marks of Johan Simon Fries, a German pewter foundry that began in 1748, 1 reading "London" to indicate the quality of the pewter for export to Great Britain, and the initials "CG."
