A finely executed oil on canvas rendering of one of the three virtuous elements represented on the Predella panels from the altarpiece of the a Deposition by Raphael in the Vatican museums. Size: 15.875" W x 7.75" H (40.3 cm x 19.7 cm)
The three theological virtues formed the predella sections of the Baglioni altarpiece which depicted the Deposition of Christ, and was painted for the family chapel in the church of San Francesco al Prato in Perugia - currently preserved in the Galleria Borghese in Rome. The altarpiece and predella panels, painted by Renaissance master Raphael in 1507, was commissioned by Atalanta Baglioni in memory of her beloved son Grifone, who had been assassinated during a family feud over control of Perugia in 1500.
