European, Portugal, Madonna and Child, oil on canvas, dated January 23, 1766. Handwritten in calligraphic lettering on the verso, "Attacta & Benadicta in Stams / 23 Jan. 1766 / Eugeni Mbargnant pins" - Eugeni Mbargnant likely the artist. A beautiful oil on canvas painting of the Virgin and Child - the composition certainly stylized yet conjuring believable, human qualities. Although the artist focused on line and form and situated the maternal pairing against a relatively flat plane, the artist emphasized mass and volume to model their visages and Christ's hands, thus providing a three-dimensional, corporeal quality to the figures. Contributing further to this naturalistic quality, the infant Christ holds onto his mother's neck and chest in a child-like manner rather than making the traditional gesture of blessing. Both visages are surrounded by vibrant haloes, and behind the pair, visible through the lunette window, one sees a rainbow amidst blue skies which provides yet a natural 'halo' to unite Mother and Child . Size: 13.75" W x 16.375" H (34.9 cm x 41.6 cm); 17.625" W x 20.125" H (44.8 cm x 51.1 cm) including frame.
