Europe, possibly Venice, ca. 18th to 20th century CE. A gorgeous ensemble of dozens of glass trade beads, some of which have been strung onto 5 rattan fiber strands to be wearable. The beautiful beads display a multitude of hues, including cobalt, emerald, lemon yellow, scarlet, navy, tangerine, cyan, periwinkle, turquoise, marigold, crimson, maroon, black, white, and violet, as well as a diverse array of forms, such as tube, barrel, ellipsoid, annular, cylinder disk, cylinder, square cylinder, and oblate. Many of the beads are millefiori beads and additionally showcase differing patterns, including striped, striated, undulating, concentric, and zigzag motifs. Size (of largest bead): 1.4" L x 0.3" in diameter (3.6 cm x 0.8 cm); Size (of longest strand): 27.5" L (69.8 cm); Size (of largest case): 12.3" L x 8.3" W (31.2 cm x 21.1 cm)
To make millefiori beads, artisans produced glass canes or rods, called murrine, by layering different-colored glass around a core. At this stage, their multicolored patterns were only visible from the cut ends of the cane. The rods were heated in a furnace, stretched and thus revealing the patterns throughout, and then cut into beads. Trade beads played a major role in the age of European exploration and colonization, serving as currency on multiple continents.
