- Lot Description
Northwestern Europe, England, ca. mid-18th to early 19th century CE. A handy brass pocket scale that was patented by "Harrison" for weighing sovereign coins with the original case! "Harrison's Improved Sovereign Balance" is a rocking scale that has 2 slightly recessed pans on the beam for holding both sovereign and half sovereign coins and a counterweight at the other end. The counterweight is stamped with "Harrison" and the royal crown, and the base is also stamped with the warranted mark. The case is a thick cardstock over a cotton lining with a paper label that advertises the patent and function on the exterior. These portable scales determined whether coins were counterfeit, as their value was determined by weight and size. The recessed pans measured the diameter and the slits in the center of the pan measured the thickness. This scale is in excellent working condition! Size of scale: 3.8" L x 0.8" W x 0.5" H (9.7 cm x 2 cm x 1.3 cm); case: 4" L x 1" W x 0.6" H (10.2 cm x 2.5 cm x 1.5 cm)
The label on the box is indiscernible in some areas but reads "To weigh and gauge sovereigns and half sovereigns, being so exact that no counterfeit can possibly go through the gauge, of sufficient weight to turn the balance."

#168142Scale is intact and fully functional. Minor surface abrasions and areas of patina. Case is original to the piece and has a hand-signed ink signature on the interior lip. The exterior has age and use expected wear, staining, and indentations. The patent label is indiscernible in some areas.Condition
