East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. This is a fine and intact porcelain cup with a bell-shaped profile and hand painted figural motifs on the exterior. The cup rests on a ring base and has a "horse hoof" shape, flaring to the thin mouth rim that is painted with a gold wash over the white glaze. Around the exterior are three figures painted in vibrant powder enamel colors; 2 figures play musical instruments, and the third man offers a coin to a three legged "money toad" known as jin chan, an auspicious toad or frog of good fortune.
