About Giles Hussey: Giles Hussey was an 18th century British portrait and history painter from Dorset, England. Hussey lived in Rome from 1732 to 1737 and was admired for his fine draughtsmanship. He studied under Venetian artist Vincenzo Damini who would eventually abandon Hussey in Bologna after taking his property. Fortunately, Hussey met Signor Ghislonzoni, a former ambassador to London who became a great supporter. His portraits were very popular with the exiled Jacobite court and their followers. Hussey created the first portrait of Charles Edward Stuart, the Young Pretender who embodied the Catholic cause in England. Hussey returned to England in 1737 hoping that his new art theories relating math and music to visual art would gain a following. Unfortunately, his theories were not as successful as his painting. Works by Hussey may be found at the Tate Gallery, London, UK and the Courtauld Institute of Art, London, UK.
