South America, Brazil, 18th century. An impressive hand-carved and hand-painted 18th century wooden nicho with gilded details housing hand-carved and polychromed stone religious figures. At the top is a Crucifixion scene with Christ on the Cross flanked by the Virgin Mary and St. John. Below is St. Anne teaching her daughter Mary how to read. The figures are finely carved with remarkable details - flowing garments, fine facial features, expressive visages and gestures, and realistic anatomy - and they retain nice traces of polychrome. The wooden nicho is beautifully painted to create a sky blue background for these figures that is further embellished with pink floral blossoms and golden holy light radiating from the Cross surrounded by billowing clouds of the celestial realm. The exterior of the nicho with all of its elegant flourishes is beautifully embellished with rich shades of blue, black, and red as well as lustrous gilding. Note: The gilding was XRF tested in several areas and measured with 27% gold. Size: 3.8" L x 8.875" W x 20.75" H (9.7 cm x 22.5 cm x 52.7 cm)

Condition
Nicho shows expected surface wear with nicks/chips, age cracks, losses to finish, some darkening and staining, a few areas of repair and restoration. Figures show surface wear with loss to polychrome and losses to high-pointed areas (i.e. John is missing one hand). Christ's limbs show signs of repair, and it is possible that there are other repairs to the figures that are difficult to see. The nicho itself stands well; the figures present with wonderful details, and there are nice remains of coloration and gilding.
