Southeast Asia, Thailand and Northeast Burma (Myanmar), ca. 18th to 19th century. A special trio of Buddha statues - the tallest one is a gilded bronze Burmese rendering of Buddha, and the other two are gilded brass Thai statues of Buddha. The Burmese Buddha is beautifully adorned with red-lacquer and gold gilding, seated in a classic meditative pose with legs crossed and hands displaying the Bhumisparsha mudra atop an integral throne. The Buddha possesses a tranquil expression with downcast eyes and presents wonderful characteristic details such as a flame ushnisha symbolizing the power of his enlightenment, and elongated ears signifying his renunciation of materialistic wealth. Size (largest): 2.625" W x 5.125" H (6.7 cm x 13 cm); (smallest): 2.125" W x 3.5" H (5.4 cm x 8.9 cm)
Joining the Burmese Buddha are two exquisite Bangkok Style (Ratanakosin) lacquer and gilt brass Buddha statues, seated with their hands also displaying the Bhumisparsha mudra atop an integral throne, with the larger example atop a three-tiered, flame spiked throne with front canopy. Both are quintessential examples of the Ratanakosin style Buddha with sharp pointed spires atop the head, flame-like motifs emerging from the shoulders and ears of the crown, beautiful robes, elaborately decorated pedestals, and of course the brilliant gold gilding. Just look at those never-ending details! Clearly these are works of spiritual art that took hours upon hours to create!
