Egypt, New Kingdom to beginning of Late Dynastic Period, 18th to 26th Dynasties, ca. 1550 to 525 BCE. A stunning and wearable gold ring featuring a swiveling steatite scarab that is incised with hieroglyphs on its flat side. The thick ring band is tubular in form with loop finials wrapped with slender gold wires that are then threaded through the loops and the scarab, holding it in place, while also allowing it to spin and present either face to the wearer. Enveloped in a rich green glaze, the elegant insect is highly articulated with an incised thorax, a pair of wings, a detailed head, a clypeus, and delineated legs bent beneath it on either side. This dazzling adornment is accompanied by a lovely black ring box. A remarkable combination to ancient history and modern style! Size (of ring): 0.9" W (2.3 cm); Size (of scarab): 0.6" L x 0.4" W (1.5 cm x 1 cm); Ring size: 4; Gold quality: 76.99% (equivalent to over 18 karat gold); Weight: 6.9 grams
