Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A stunning ring made of 77% gold (equivalent to over 18 karats) displaying a thick, tubular band and an ovoid bezel of a carnelian intaglio. The hand-carved gem is skillfully incised with the image of a soldier or Virtus - the personification of valor or courage - facing left and holding a spear in front of him and a shield to his back. He wears a plumed helmet, armor, a tunic, and a pair of boots.
