Ancient Greece, Archaic Period, ca. late 6th to early 5th century BCE (scarab); Western Europe, France, dated June 12, 1879 (gold setting). An exquisite beetle-form scarab of a characteristically-Egyptian style, hand-carved from carnelian of warm vermilion hues with faint crimson veining. The ovoid scarab boasts a myriad of finely-incised details which delineate the wing case, legs, and head, and the topside has been meticulously smoothed. The underside depicts a right-facing ram, with curling horns and a powerful body, standing within a hatched border. The scarab is presented within an antique French 18K gold setting with an ovoid bezel surrounded with a corded decoration, two lateral poles with semicircular terminals, and a slender pin and barrel clasp on the verso. The manufacture date of the gold setting engraved on the back reads "12 Juin 1879." A gorgeous and wearable example! Size (gold setting): 1.25" W x 0.625" H (3.2 cm x 1.6 cm); size (scarab): 0.375" W x 0.5" H (1 cm x 1.3 cm); quality of gold: 18K; total weight: 5.4 grams.
