Edward Penfield (American, 1866-1925) - "Joan of Arc by the Most Popular Magazine Writer Begins in April Harper's" - lithograph in colors - signed in the plate on lower right - Publisher: Harper Publications, ca. 1895-98. An original poster depicting Joan of Arc holding a flag in one hand and pointing her sword in the other - created in a wonderful warm color palette of yellows and oranges. This poster served as an advertisement for Mark Twain's anonymous novel entitled, "Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc/The Sieur Louis de Conte" published in Harper's Magazine. Known as the "originator of the poster in America", Penfield contributed to Harper's in the 1890's and his work is coveted by antique poster collectors. Size: 17.75" L x 12.75" W (45.1 cm x 32.4 cm)

Condition
Small loss to upper left corner. Small nicks/tears to edges. On the verso, there is acid free tape over the central fold and tears at corners and edges as shown. Areas of discoloration at edges and black smudges over the upper sword and coiffure. This said the imagery is still strong.
