North America, United States, ca. 1859 CE. A handsome carbine or short rifle known as a Sharps Model 1859 with a lengthy iron barrel, a bulky wooden stock, and iron fittings. Boasting a dropping block design, the single-shooting gun is breechloading, which means it was loaded from the end of its barrel allowing the shooter to easily load the gun and shoot more quickly than with muzzleloader rifles that were loaded via the front. Several stamped patents can be found on the sides and top of the gun with one from 1948 on one side and 2 more, one from 1852 and another from 1859, on the other. The top of the gun is additionally stamped with "NEW MODEL 1859," "SHARPS RIFLE / MANUFG. CO. / HARTFORD CONN.," and the serial number "49019." Size (of rifle): 38.75" L x 4.25" W (98.4 cm x 10.8 cm); Size (of bore): 0.5" in diameter (1.3 cm)
As many officers at the time were distrustful of breechloading weapons, believing that they caused men to waste ammunition, Sharps only produced 11,000 of the Model 1859s with most of them given to sharpshooters. However, the model was still carried by the 13th Pennsylvania Reserves of the Union Army during the American Civil War, who served in a number of important battles of the Eastern Theater, including Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg.

Condition
Trigger guard and action are not original. Action is sealed and solid which prevents the rifle from being loaded and functioning. Expected surface wear commensurate with age, as shown. Otherwise, excellent with nice patina.
