North American, Eastern United States, probably Kentucky or Pennsylvania, ca. 1840s CE. A beautiful percussion rifle with a sturdy stock carved from a single piece of finely striped wood, perhaps tiger maple. The armament features an octagonal, muzzle-loading barrel with interior rifling grooves, a modern steel ram rod, and a percussion firing mechanism near the back. A trigger and set trigger beneath the lock plate are surrounded by a brass trigger guard, and a pair of crossing hammers is stamped on the stock opposite the lock plate. The stock is decorated with 4 ovoid brass panels with etched motifs, and another, larger panel on the butt stock is etched with an eagle. The opposite side of the butt features a patch box with an articulating lid that contains several red and green fabric patches. Size (full): 48.2" L x 2" W (122.4 cm x 5.1 cm); (barrel): 32.9" L x 0.9" W (83.6 cm x 2.3 cm); (bore): 0.33" W (0.8 cm)
