Lot Description

North America, United States, New York, New York City, ca. 1814 CE. A fascinating, leather-bound Bible comprised of 1094 machine-made paper pages and titled, "The Holy Bible: Containing The Old and New Testaments: Together with the Apocrypha: Translated out of the Original Tongues, and with the Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revise with Marginal Notes and References to which are added, An Index; An Alphabetical Table of all the names in the Old and New Testaments, with their significations; Tables of Scripture Weights, Measures, And Coins: John Brown's Concordance, & c." Containing 13 leaves of detailed, black and white plates, the massive codex was printed and sold in New York by Collins and Co. Size: 8.9" L x 3.1" W x 11.3" H (22.6 cm x 7.9 cm x 28.7 cm)

Provenance: private Littleton, Colorado, USA collection, acquired between 1959 to 1962

Condition

Losses of spine and areas of leather on peripheries. Front cover detached and only "Concordance" attached to back cover. Remaining pages are detached from each other into 4 sections, one section being only comprised of 2 pages, but the others of comparable sizes. Tearing, folding, and staining to many pages with losses to peripheries of some pages. Markings from previous owner - likely a child - on title page and frontispiece, as well as a few other pages. Nice patina throughout.
