Southeast Asia, Thailand or Burma / Myanmar, Ayutthaya Kingdom, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. A brass right hand in the traditional Abhaya Mudra, the gesture of protection with the hand pointing upwards. Gently bent at the wrist, this graceful hand displays a flat palm and lengthy, slender fingers all pointing upwards. Buddhist hand symbols are often presented in specific styles to represent different aspects of Buddha and Buddhist values. This gesture is also called "Gesture of Fearlessness" or "blessing" or "fearless mudra." This hand has strong details, such as the fingernails, and is life-size. Hand was likely previously attached to a figure. Abrasions and nicks throughout with some minor losses to surface. Otherwise, very nice with lovely patina.
