USA Domestic: 12/14 for Standard; 12/23 for Express; International: 12/7 for Standard; 12/19 for ExpressEurope, Spanish Flemish School, Baroque period, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. Finely painted in oil on copper, a magnificent depiction of the Ecstasy of Saint Teresa, a scene made famous by Gianlorenzo Bernini's marble sculpture in the Cornaro Chapel of Santa Maria della Vittoria in Rome. The qualities of motion and emotion used to present Saint Teresa of Avila (1515-1582), a nun of the Carmelite order who was among the most important mystical saints of the Spanish Counter-Reformation, truly captures the passionate dramas of the Baroque period. Upon her father's death, Saint Teresa described how she saw visions, fell into trances, heard voices, and was struck in the heart by an angel's fire-tipped arrow of divine love multiple times. The theatricality and sensory impact of this painting is skillfully delineated in a palette of rich jewel tones along with the powerful lights and darks of tenebroso (tenebrism) - and it is set in an ornate gilt frame that complements the artist's Baroque style, technique, and mesmerizing iconography. Size: 8.5" L x 6.3" W (21.6 cm x 16 cm); 13.5" L x 11.25" W (34.3 cm x 28.6 cm) including frame.
The number of artists from Northern Europe, particularly Flanders, who were active in Spain may be surprising. However, what made these artists so popular in Spain was that they married palpable drama and emotion with a meticulous rendering of realistic details. The Spanish had a taste for both drama and realism in literary works such as "Poema de mio Cid" (ca. 1200), "Libro de buen amor" (ca. 1343), "La Celestina" (1499), and "Lazarillo de Tormes" (1554). This said, the realism found in Flemish paintings was far from naturalistic; rather scholars refer to it as a "realism of particulars" - meaning realistic details are found in imaginative, theatrical scenes.
Provenance: The William F. Draper Collection, New York City, USA, acquired via descent from the late William Franklin Draper (1912-2003), an accomplished American artist whose career spanned seven decades. Known as the "Dean of American Portraiture," William Draper was the only artist to paint President John F. Kennedy from life, and his oeuvre includes marvelous landscapes from his world travels, military paintings as he was one of only seventeen Combat Artists in WWII, and portraits of illustrious individuals.
