North America, Native American, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. A fabulous pair of Native American necklaces, each featuring dozens of opaque glass trade beads strung on a modern strand to be wearable. The longest of the 2 is comprised of vibrant cobalt beads, all presenting ellipsoid forms. Alternatively, the other necklace displays barrel beads in a shade of black. Beads like these were originally traded by the Russians to the indigenous peoples of Alaska in exchange for coveted objects like sea otter pelts. These beads were a desirable form of currency, similar to wampum used in the far north. A stunning pair of Native American fashion - perfect for any occasion! Size (of longest): 40.5" L (102.9 cm); Size (of largest bead): 0.5" L x 0.25" W (1.3 cm x 0.6 cm)
Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s
