**First Time At Auction**
East Asia, Japan, Edo period, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. A dramatic carved and painted wooden mask in the Noh style depicting a hannya, a jealous female demon with horns and a leering mouth. Hannya are the souls of women that have been consumed by obsession or jealousy, and this style of mask has been used in the Noh theatre tradition to portray female characters who have been betrayed by her love and thus transformed into the devilish spirit. Although the face can look frightening and full of rage, it also looks sorrowful and grieving- capturing both wrath and pain is difficult, but simply tilting the head and changing the perspective of the audience can convey this change in expression. Size: 9" L x 6" W (22.9 cm x 15.2 cm)
Please note, on the interior of the mask is an antique label printed with "M.F.A" and hand written "C.G. WELD." This mask was part of an 18-mask collection that was on loan to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts from January 7th 1884 to June of 1904 when the collection was returned to Charles Goddard Weld (1857 to 1911). Weld was a well-known Boston doctor and philanthropist with an extensive Asian art collection from which he contributed to collections at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem Massachusetts. Upon his death in 1911, Weld bequeathed much of his remaining collection to the Museum of Fine Arts, and many of his contributions are still on view as part of the permanent collection.
