Western / Central Europe, Germany, ca. second half of the 17th century CE. An attractive example of a carbon steel lobster-tailed pot helmet, so-called because of how the articulated lames of the back brim resemble the individual sections of a lobster's tail. The tall dome features raised, radiating protrusions that surround a central ringlet and terminate just before reaching the midsection. The spade-shaped brim has a reinforced edge and a central gap along the back where a lengthy nasal bar can be raised or lowered. The diamond-shaped ear flaps have several ventilation perforations and decorative rivets, and the dome interior is lined with narrow padded strips. Stamped marking include an "L" atop the nasal guard, a "W" on the tip of the frontal brim, and "VII" beneath the brim with a petite dot over the V. Size: 16.125" L x 10.9" W x 10.25" H (41 cm x 27.7 cm x 26 cm)

Condition
Professionally cleaned and preserved. Padded strips likely replaced. Minor abrasions and pitting to surfaces, with some small hairline fissures on one ear flap. Nice overall form. Lames of lobster-tail are slightly sticky but still articulate, and threaded bolt securing nasal guard still turns smoothly.
