Attributed to Vauban (French, 1633-1707). A 17th century French plan of Charleville, most likely by Vauban given the style, that features the Citadel, the River Meuse, and fortification demarcations. Sebastien Le Prestre de Vauban (1633-1707), usually referred to as Vauban, was a French military engineer who worked for King Louis XIV (1638-1715). Vauban's work is highly regarded for its contribution to military history. He was the founder of the Corps royal des ingenieurs militaires which employed a curriculum based on his publications regarding strategy, training, and engineering design.
