East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, possibly Kangxi period, ca. 17th to 19th century CE. A gorgeous porcelain vase of an elegant, baluster form known as a "Guanyin Zun" enveloped in lustrous glaze of a brilliant, copper-red called sang de boeuf or oxblood with 2 flambe splashes of lavender and a crackled mushroom-color covering the underside of the foot, the rim, and the interior. Perhaps named "Guanyin" for its feminine silhouette resembling that of the Bodhisattva, the vessel presents high, rounded shoulders that taper to a spreading foot, all surmounted by a short, cylindrical neck and a flared mouth. The copper-red glaze seen here is known as langyao ware, deriving its name from Lang Tingji, director of the official kilns at Jingdezhen between 1705 and 1712, who is credited with the revival of monochrome glaze, like the red glaze of this example. Size: 6.6" Diameter x 14.8" H (16.8 cm x 37.6 cm)
This color glaze is considered the most challenging to regulate during the firing process as exactly the right conditions are required within the kiln to achieve the rich tones. Although copper-red was used in the Ming dynasty, the red glazes of the Qing dynasty became even more refined and were of an exceptionally even and vibrant tone, as notable in this example.
