Northwestern Europe, England, ca. 1797 CE. A large copper two-pence cartwheel coin with a broad diameter and thick edge. The obverse features the laureate head of King George III facing right in profile with "GEORGIUS III. D: G. REX." around the perimeter. The reverse is cast with Britannia seated with a trident and shield. The year and “BRITANNIA." Is around the edge. All lettering is incuse to prevent counterfeiting. Below the shield is "SOHO" for the place of private mint by Matthew Boulton in Birmingham. The 1797 two-pence were massive coins and purposefully created so the intrinsic value of copper would correspond with the face value, and they quickly gained the nickname cartwheel due to the diameter. By 1805 copper prices increased by about 30%, making the material more valuable than the face value, and most two-pence coins were withdrawn from circulation and melted down, making this a nice find! Fit with a modern wood frame. Size of pence: 1.675" in diameter x 0.2" W (4.3 cm x 0.5 cm); frame: 4.25" L x 4.25" W (10.8 cm x 10.8 cm); Weight: 56.6 grams
