Northwestern Europe, England, London, ca. 1786 CE. A rare copy of the Complete Voyages of Captain Cook. This enormous tome is the most complete account of his first, second, third, and fourth - and final - voyage. The book is written by Alexander Hogg and the 655-page folio is bound by a red calf over buckram. The spine is gilt embossed with “The Genuine and Complete History of the Whole of Capt. Cook's Voyages." This is illustrated with lovely copperplate etchings and maps that take up full pages and in themselves are fascinating: depicting human sacrifice, a man with a knife through his pierced ear, landscapes, and maps. This is an intriguing account, and this copy was clearly well read and thumbed through with vintage repairs. Size: 9.75" L x 3" W x 14.75" H (24.8 cm x 7.6 cm x 37.5 cm)
The interior cover has a book plate for the owner Bill Hart of the USS Cachalot, a warship commissioned in 1933 and anchored in Pearl Harbor during the infamous WWII attack. The last page has handwritten notes in pencil that note the important pages of interest, perhaps to Hart or another reader.
