**First Time At Auction**
North America, United States, Connecticut, Revolutionary War era, ca. 1781 CE. A remarkable piece of American Revolutionary War history! This is an imprinted receipt on paper filled out in black ink as a promissory note by the State of Connecticut. The note reads: "State of Connecticut Pay Table Office, Hartford, December 26th 1781. Sir, Pay unto Ralph Pomeroy, Esq; D. Q. M. or Order, Two Pounds Lawful Silver Money, out of the Tax of Two Shillings and Six Pence on the Pound, granted by the General Assembly in May last, and charge the State." The bottom is signed with two names of the Committee. William Moseley and Fenn Wadsworth and the third signature of “Hez” (Hezekiah) Rogers is written vertically across the note. The verso is signed and endorsed by Ralph Pomeroy with additional notations. Ralph Pomeroy served as a Military Paymaster for wages and reimbursement for expenses or losses during the Revolutionary War. The cost of the war laid a heavy burden upon each colony, without a federal government to levy taxes. The military finances for the colony of Connecticut were handled by a committee of four men known as the Pay-Table. These members included important members of society, including jurist Oliver Ellsworth, attorney Oliver Wolcott, Jr., Hezekiah Rogers, William Moseley, Fenn Wadsworth, Eleazer Wales and General Samuel Wyllys. An interesting look at an early payment system necessary to fund the Continental Army in Connecticut.
