Western Europe, Spain, ca. 16th century CE. A battle-scarred iron cuirass that includes both the chest and black plate with remains of the original leather straps! The peascod-style breastplate bears a central crest that tapers to a protruding point as well as back-folded rims along the neckline and semicircular arm openings. Beneath the breastplate is a curved waist panel with two additional segmented plates and two pairs of partial leather straps that once held additional lames. The convex back plate half would have fit snugly on one's back. Modern leather straps on the shoulders and a belt accompany the armor to illustrate how the armor plates would have been secured while worn. A fine patina has formed across the front and back panels and the front has old scratches and indentations that may have been from fighting. Size: 17.75" L x 15" W (45.1 cm x 38.1 cm); 35" H (88.9 cm) on included custom stand.
Cuirass pieces like this example were some of the most well-known and reputed armor pieces throughout Europe due to its ample protection, interchangeable components, and lightweight design.
