Near East, Central Asia, Turkey to Iran, Ottoman Empire, ca. 16th to 17th century CE. An iron "turban" or "chichak" helmet presenting the classic pointed conical form with a spiked finial, chainmail aventails suspended from loops around the opening rim, and a fine decorative program of arabesque shapes and inscriptions in calligraphic script. The surface fluting is representative of the folds of cloth that shape a turban, and the etched registers around the upper and lower rim contain elegant Arabic script. These are possibly Koranic verses, words of advice, or praising virtues - the trace amounts of gold suggest the curvilinear motifs were once gilded. A decorative nose guard is fitted between the sockets, inserted through a band riveted just above the defensive brim. The chainmail aventails consists of 3 separate triangular curtains to protect the neck and cheeks. Size (helmet): 8.75" Diameter x 10.5" H (22.2 cm x 26.7 cm); (chainmail): 13" L x 10.5" H (33 cm x 26.7 cm)
