Johannes Gigas, the author of the map, was a doctor (personal physician to Elector Ferdinand I of Bavaria and the Bishop of Munster) and also worked as a mathematician, physicist, and cartographer. He was known for relatively precise land surveys in Westphalia and published an atlas with maps of Westphalian territories in Cologne in 1620, which was soon thereafter published in the Netherlands by Blaeu and Janssonius in a modified new edition.
