Western Europe, probably France or Italy, ca. 16th to 17th century. A gorgeous wooden reliquary of Gothic arch form and highly burnished with a tiered base and carved with a crucifixion scene in high relief. Decorated as though it is a stained glass window, the central Crucifixion scene is surrounded by an intricately carved vegetal motif periphery, a dotted border, another border with columns at the bottom and a wavy pattern at the top, and then another innermost border with Corinthian columns and inward facing trefoils. A thick bottom border rich with eucharistic iconography lies at the base of the main Biblical narrative, featuring a central chalice or Holy Grail in a sun motif and arch flanked by 2 Gothic arches containing a bundle of wheat on the left (for the body of Christ) and a group of grapes on the right (for the blood of Christ). Above, an emaciated Jesus hangs on the cross, nude for all but a loin cloth tied at his waist, with his head angled down to his right as a diagonal banner reading "INRI", which stands for "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews", hangs over him. Size: 4.875" L x 2.5" W x 8.5" H (12.4 cm x 6.4 cm x 21.6 cm)
Two saints, perhaps the Virgin Mary or Mary Magdalene and an apostle, stand to either side of the crucifix, both with their hands together in prayer. The backside presents with a striped starburst-like border and a hinged door that swings from top to bottom to reveal a multi-shelved storage area. Inside one can find a saint's tooth and a document with information about Ely Eliot Palmer, the previous owner and US Ambassador to Afghanistan.
