Europe, England, ca. 16th century. A wonderful miniature portrait of a British royal, perhaps Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603, reigned 1558-1603) , finely painted on wood, and set over blue velvet and in an ornate openwork gold frame. The composition is bust-length and presents its beautiful subject bedecked with jewelry adorning her neck, ears, and upraised coiffure of golden curls - truly dripping with gold and precious stones - and donning a magnificent white lace collar. The style of the painting resembles that of the famous Nicholas Hilliard (British, 1547-1619) who scholars have associated with 135 portraits of Queen Elizabeth I. Size: painting itself measures 3.35" W x 4.33" H (8.5 cm x 11 cm); frame measures 9.25" L x 6" W (23.5 cm x 15.2 cm); frame composition: 52-87% gold (euivalent to 10K to 20K) with 7-34% copper
According to Christina J. Faraday, "There is no substitute for seeing portrait miniatures first-hand. At only 5–6cm in diameter, the astonishingly small scale at which artists achieved such intricacy and psychological penetration is impossible to appreciate unless seen in person. The term 'portrait miniatures' was rarely used by the Elizabethans, who preferred the terms 'limning' or 'pictures in little'. Yet, despite their small dimensions, miniatures have exerted powerful effects on their viewers, whether Elizabethan or contemporary. Period sources brim with anecdotes about the longing gazes and secret passions that miniatures encouraged." (Christina J. Faraday, "Little Britain - the Elizabethan passion for portrait miniatures" Apollo Magazine - 13 April 2019)
