Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Inuit & Yupik, ca. 15th to 19th century CE. A collection of over 50 pre-contact to 19th century artifacts made from walrus, caribou, and whale bone, teeth, walrus ivory, wood, sinew, and iron. The tools served many functions, and most are fishing and hunting implements: harpoon points, spearheads, and fishing barbs. At the center is a large bow drill with a caribou rib bow, sinew cord, and wooden drill with an iron rod for starting fires and drilling holes; below are bone fragments with holes from such a drill. Also included are some teeth from rodents and carnivores, including a jawbone from a canine, a coyote or juvenile wolf. Along the lower edge of the frame is an adze, and several hand axes or scrapers, made with bone handles and stone blades. Size of largest bow drill: 14" L x 0.75" W (35.6 cm x 1.9 cm); smallest tooth: 0.5" L x 0.5" W (1.3 cm x 1.3 cm; frame: 32" L x 25" W (81.3 cm x 63.5 cm)
This contains pre-Act pieces of walrus ivory under the MMPA and cannot be sold internationally or to anyone residing in the states of California, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, and Washington. We guarantee that the pieces were made prior to 1972.

Condition
Most are fragments of larger pieces. The bow drill is very good, with intact sinew cord. All are mounted on a felt backing and a paperboard frame. Some pieces are coming loose and should be reattached. Nice patina and signs of age and use on all bone and ivory pieces.
